Misktakes We Make in Thinking

Ref: C3125183

We’re all human, but our judgements about things are often worse than they need to be. Psychologists and philosophers have together developed a range of explanations of different kinds of mistakes we make in thinking, all of which can be practically recognised in our lives, and to some extent avoided through fuller awareness of them. These courses will cover a range of cognitive biases and fallacies, with practice in identifying them in context and seeking to avoid them, so as to improve our judgement. They combine aspects of psychology, critical thinking and philosophy. Mistakes we make in thinking 1 will last 6 weeks, and will introduce some of the most important and basic cognitive errors. Mistakes we make in thinking 2 will be a further 6 week course covering a range of more specific errors.

Course aim

The second of two linked courses that provide an introduction to the effects of biases and fallacies in our thinking

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • Feedback will be given informally via discussion

What else do I need to know?
