The course introduces the work of CR Mackintosh in the context of early-20th century architecture and design. It uses a case study of 78 Derngate, Northampton, to explore Mackintosh's original designs for owner WJ Bassett-Lowke. It then looks at the considerations involved in the conservation, restoration and opening of the house to the public .

Course aim

To introduce the work of C.R. Mackintosh in context. To make learners aware of the interplay of client and architect in design projects. To make learners aware of the considerations entailed in the restoration of historic properties.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Students will be familiar with the key architectural and design works of CR Mackintosh.
  • Students will be able to explain the position of Mackintosh in the context of early-20th century design.
  • They will be able to discuss some of the considerations (practical and philosophical) in undertaking restoration of an historic property.

How will I be taught?

  • The day school will consist of illustrated presentations and group discussions.

  • As this is a day school, there is no formal way of providing feedback.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
