Painting in the late Twentieth century

This seven-session course concentrates on painting exhibited in the last four decades of the 20th century through close-views of works made by six significant and diverse painters: Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, R.B. Kitaj, Gerhard Richter, Paula Rego, David Hockney and Maggi Hambling. After an introductory session, the focus each week will be upon selected works from one artist and their context. Each session will use a limited number of works to focus for comparison. From attentions to developments in drawn figuration and transformed photography to new understandings of portraiture and abstraction.

Course aim

To provide a vocabulary to describe contemporary figurative and abstract paintings; to enhance recognition of the functions behind the production of late twentieth-century painting and aspects of period style.

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • By the end Use a basic vocabulary to describe visual works of art.
  • Enhance recognition of the functions behind the production of contemporary painting.
  • Enhance recognition of aspects of period style.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be invited to use a web site specifically linked to the sessions you attend.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Some students would benefit from a notebook.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • A specific itemised calendar will be provided on day one which could lead you to research some of the works by the artists involved.
