Sewing for Beginners

This is the perfect sewing course for you if you are a beginner and new to sewing and wishing to learn basic skills in sewing and dress making. Step by step support and guidance will be provided during the whole course. You are free to learn in your own time. You will learn through working towards your own projects and towards a set of activities designed to give you confidence in sewing. The class is very friendly, safe and supportive. Perfect environment to learn new skills.

Course aim

The purpose of the course is to cover: Basics of using a sewing machine. Basics of dress making including, taking body measurements and creating simple dress patterns. Introduction to different types of fabrics. Practice small sewing projects.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use my sewing machine safely and will be able to perform basic maintenance.
  • Understand basic sewing machine and hand sewing techniques.
  • Take body measurements for making garments
  • Use different sewing machine feet
  • Use different sewing machine feet

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Although basic equipments are provided, students are welcome to bring their own equipments. Students will have to bring their own fabric for projects.
