Do you have a pastry-making phobia – then this course is for you. The tutor will show how to make great shortcrust pastry every time and teach you a few new ones. In no time you will be able to know your flaky from your filo and your choux from your suet pastry!

Course aim

To teach students how to make recipes using different types of pastry and pies, and will include using a variety of cooking skills.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for women only as it is held in a women's centre

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Create at least 2 savoury dishes using an unfamiliar pastry
  • Create at least 2 sweet dishes using an unfamiliar pastry
  • Develop kitchen skills such as mixing, baking, and chopping.
  • Confidently read and follow a recipe to make pastry goods
  • Demonstrate safe and hygienic cooking procedures

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Students will need an apron, baking trays and food containers to take the food they make home. The cost of ingredients will also have to be met by the students and this will be approximately £3 - 4 per session.
