Sewing for Beginners will learn you the skills and techniques to make small hand crafted items in a lively and friendly atmosphere. You will learn how to draft a paper pattern, use a sewing and embroidery machine to produce quality items that look handmade not homemade! We will also discuss and explore the rich history of the river wear, the port and the textiles that were shipped here from around the world.

Course aim

'Textiles through Time’ will provide an introduction to sewing, pattern making and machine embroidery with a view to implementing/developing these skills in your own home.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Learners will be able to draft a paper pattern
  • Learners will be able to program and operate a computerised embroidery machine and standard sewing machine.
  • Learners will be able to demonstrate 2 hand stitches.
  • Learners will be able to produce a quality handcrafted item.
  • Learners will be able to further develop their social skills and confidence.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • All resources and materials will be provided. Light refreshments will be provided throughout the day.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
