Local History of South Shields

The course will investigate and examine the development of the North East from the arrival of the Romans to the historic context of the UK leaving the EU through the study of local history through primary sources, visual displays, works of art and visits. The course is taught through an interesting mix of tutor input, student input, group work and class discussion. Students are encouraged to share their own understanding of local history through sharing experiences, family history or through artefacts which they have collected over the years. The course will use the extensive collection of art and artefacts from the South Shields Museum.

Course aim

To engage students in a better understanding of their local community through the study of local history.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • understand how the local community that we live in has developed over the centuries.
  • contribute to group and class discussion with confidence
  • use and interpret primary source material
  • place past events into an historical context

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
