Knit and Stitch - Creative Crafts

Do you want to learn to knit, crochet or sew? Would you like to make your own clothes, toys or furnishings? If so, then this course is for you. A friendly and sociable course in a community venue where you can try out new craft techniques to create an individual project or work work with the group to complete a project that will be donated to a local school or organisation.

Course aim

This course offers students the opportunity to try a number of different craft techniques, including knitting, hand/machine sewing and quilting. Students can also take part in a group project.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate 3 different textile techniques.
  • Demonstrate 2 basic sewing machine stitches and use them.
  • Work as part of a group to plan and contribute to a group project.
  • Use the internet as a source of inspiration an d learning.
  • Complete at least 2 pieces of work.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • You can provide your own materials for individual projects or purchase materials from the tutor at a very reasonable cost. You could bring your sewing machine, otherwise sewing machines are available.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
