This course continues with students developing their individual sewing skills on their personnel projects All things are possible with in depth knowledge of the tutor and the confidence and the imagination of the students to bring new ideas and tasks they would like to achieve These skills can then be practiced in your own time and the knowledge gained shared within your own community and family

Course aim

to extend the students skills and techniques required to alter a garment to give a perfect fit using paper patterns sewing techniques and an overlocker

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • expand on the knowledge gained to construct a garment using different fabrics
  • Alter a paper pattern to give a perfect fit, tailored designs and fashion and fabric to cover the diversity of the different cultures within the class
  • learn how to change the 4 threads successfully on the overlocker
  • Complete a garment using a sewing machine and finish off professionally Recognise the different processes needed when using an overlocker
  • follow all health and safety regulations when working with machinery and equipment

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
