The course will look in depth at records of people living and dying in the region around Darlington in the seventeenth century. The basis of the course will be the detailed examination of historical documents relating to individuals and communities and the framework within which they lived and worked.

Course aim

the aim of the course is to examine the context of the lives of people living and dying in the region around Darlington in the seventeenth century.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • understand how and why the living conditions of people in the rural region around Darlington changed during the seventeenth century
  • understand how the local manors were administered
  • appreciate something of what it was like to be living in Darlington in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries
  • appreciate something of the lives of certain individuals living here at that time

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
