Introduction to World Archaeology

What do archaeologists do, and why do they do it? In this course we will introduce some of the key methods and techniques used in archaeology. From our classroom we will explore a variety of archaeological sites from around the world and look at the research that has been carried out. Some sites may be familiar, some may be new to you!

Course aim

To provide an introductory overview to the subject of archaeology, investigate a variety of archaeological sites from around the world, focussing on the archaeological techniques used at the site

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • List at least three different techniques used by archaeologists to investigate a site
  • Describe the basic principles of stratigraphy
  • List at least three different methods of dating used in archaeology
  • Be able to discuss at least three different sites from across the globe

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Depending on availability we may include a local excursion. There may be a short piece of background information to read between sessions.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • You may find it useful to bring something to write with and a notepad
