"Women weaving for a better world " is the title of the group project to be under taking in this course, and it will be looking at ways of improving our personal, community, global and environmental world. This course is suitable for absolute beginners to creative textiles and also students who would like to experiment with and investigate other textile processes. We shall explore creating functional work e.g. bags, wall-hanging and cushions. Whilst considering embellishment of work to include the use of recycled materials and other cultural textile influences. It will provide learners with the opportunity to be involved in the wider community and helps build learners confidence in expressing ideas and sharing their skills.

Course aim

To provide a practical introduction to creative textile techniques and investigate weaving skills through a group project. To improve all practical creative skills of continuing learners. A group piece will be designed and produced.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Design and produce a decorative and functional piece of textile work.
  • Translate design to pattern, layout of fabrics, cutting and construction techniques.
  • Hand stitching techniques and embellishment processes.
  • Investigate designs and traditional patterns from other cultural sources and include in weaving.
  • Apply safe working practices in the use of tools and materials.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Join in to create a group weaving project.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Production of a personal portfolio if appropriate.

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • A sewing kit which includes needles, threads, scissors and tape measure.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
