Course aim

To teach students how to make healthy food choices and recipes with the aim to lose weight and improve their diet.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for women only as it is held in a women's centre

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate at least three kitchen skills used to cook low fat meals.
  • Identify healthy food swaps that will help lose weight at home.
  • Give examples of how to set targets to lose weight
  • Summerise the advantages and disadvantages of well known diet regimes.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Students will need an apron and food containers to take the food they make home. The cost of ingredients will also have to be met by the students and this will be approximately £3 - 4 per session.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • It would be useful if students have chosen a diet plan to follow and were familiar with the format of the diet, eg calorie counting, low-fat diet, 5:2 diet, low GI diet, etc.
