Course aim

This course is for anyone who would like learn how to arrange flowers, either for your own home or making floral gifts.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for people with little spoken English
  • This course is for women only as it is held in a women's centre
  • This is a non accredited course.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate the principal elements for a balanced design
  • Condition flowers and foliage
  • Make themed designs, and floral gifts.
  • Demonstrate basic wiring techniques
  • Identify spring flowers and how to arrange them.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Written and glossary handouts provided.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress
  • Photographs of your individual projects will be taken for you to keep in your file.

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • All students are to bring their own flowers and foliage, a basic tool kit in which can be built up throughout the course. Floral foam provided from the tutor at a small cost. A folder and note pad are helpful for taking notes.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • At the end of this course you could enrol in floristry college, or gain employment in local florists, or voluntary and community organisations.
