Active Voices

The Active Voices course is aimed at anyone who wants to start making positive changes in their community, or for anyone who is involved in social action but wants to develop their skills and confidence. We will look at: - Power and leadership - What are they? What are the pros and cons? What are the barriers to taking action? - Civic Engagement and you - What does it mean to you to get involved in your community? What are the benefits and challenges? - Project planning - how do you from an idea to a real action plan? - Media work - how do you engage with the media to get your ideas out? E.g. how to write a press release and manage an interview - The group will vote on what else they want to cover, from a range of topics including: Working in groups, managing conflict, how to get funding, assertiveness, campaigning, promotion, events, site visits, research methods etc

Course aim

To provide an introduction to Community Engagement and provide you with the skills to get active in your community

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Create a project plan from start to finish
  • Engage with the media, e.g. through press releases
  • Gain confidence in your ability to take on a social problem - at a local, national or even international level
  • Demonstrate a range of the skills needed to make social change effectively

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
