West African Drumming

Ref: C2523579

We will learn the fundamental skills to drum together in a group playing traditional rhythms. We will learn on bass drums (played with sticks) and djembes (played with hands). The goal is to build confidence and the skill base of learners so that they might join one of my other groups - including my performance group Drummed Up.

Course aim

To provide an introduction to West African rhythms using a range of traditional instruments

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Play the main 3 sounds on the djembe - bass tone and slap
  • Some some bass drum and bell parts for a traditional rhythm piece
  • Play djembe accompaniment parts
  • Play the introduction and break for the rhythm
  • Understand the cultural purpose and context for the rhythm we are learning

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • There will be opportunities to look at material outside of the class that might be useful and/or interesting the students. This is in no way compulsory

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Please wear comfortable clothing as we will play standing and sitting and be moving too. Drumming can be quite energetic so please be comfortable.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Invitation to join Drummed Up, my West African drumming group
