The Winter Garden

This course is for those wishing to learn how to prepare the garden for the change in season. We will begin with basic gardening skills, such as weeding, digging and potting. We will learn how to plan for the season ahead and learn about plants suitable for the spring.

Course aim

To introduce students to the skills needed for Winter into Spring-time gardening. Students will learn potting techniques and how to plan and grow plants for the growing season ahead.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • The course is suitable for all. though you will need to be moderately physically fit as we will be working outside. Students should be registered with WHIST and Women only.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify at least 2 plants that need to be pruned in the spring and prune them.
  • Sow at least 3 different types of seeds correctly
  • Know how to dig a herb patch and choose suitable plants
  • Review the pots and planters available and create a planting scheme for them
  • Research ways to improve the soil's fertility

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Throughout the session, students will receive ongoing feedback. At the end of the session they will be encouraged to talk about how they found the lesson

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • As we will be working in the garden, students should wear old clothes and suitable stout footwear. They could bring their own garden gloves, if they have them.
