Xmas Cake Decoration

Learners will create and decorate a sponge christmas cake using a variety of skills. Learners will crumb coat a sponge cake and understand the reasons for doing this. Students will then cover the cake with fondant icing. Learners will make several fondant figures using fondant modelling paste to decorate the top of the cake.

Course aim

To provide a brief introduction to cake decoration and to enable learners to create and decorate a christmas cake

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate basic food hygiene principals for cake decoration
  • Crumb coat a cake and describe the reasons for doing this
  • Cover a cake with fondant icing
  • Make fondant models from fondant modelling paste
  • Demonstrate how to use sugarcraft modelling tools when creating fondant figures

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Learners will be required to bring a 8" round sponge cake to class and required to pay £5 towards the cost of all other materials that will be provided by the tutor
