Sewing for Beginners

This is the perfect sewing course for you if you are a beginner and new to sewing and wishing to learn basic skills in sewing and dress making. Step by step support from the tutor, will be available during the whole course and you are encouraged to learn at your own pace. The class is very friendly, safe and supportive and is the perfect environment to learn new skills.

Course aim

In this course you’ll learn 1. Basics of using a sewing machine 2. Basics of dress making and creating simple dress pattern 3. Introduction to different types of fabrics

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use a sewing machine safely
  • Basic maintenance of a sewing machine
  • Follow pre printed sewing patterns
  • Knowledge of different types of fabrics
  • How to attach a zipper

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Students will have to bring their own fabrics for the projects. Sewing machines are available for use in the classroom, but students are encouraged to bring their own if they prefer.

You can enrol online if you meet all of the following requirements:

  • are paying the standard fee or are on any of the qualifying benefits
