Cake Decorating

during this course learners with gain knowledge of cake decorating using a variety of methods, from covering cakes with fondant icing, marzipan and buttercream. learners will also be learning to make sugar models from modelling icing and also create some sugar flowers from sugar florist paste. Learners will also be using royal icing and buttercream for decorating their cakes. this will include the use of piping bags and piping nozzles. Cakes this term will include a childrens halloween and a festive cakes.

Course aim

to provide knowledge of cake decorating using a variety of methods with a view to creating celebration cakes for friends and family

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for women only as it is held in a women's centre

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • learn to use fondant icing to cover a celebration cake
  • make and use piping bags with the use of piping nozzles filled with buttercream / royal icing for the purpose of decorating celebration cakes
  • learn how to colour fondant icing, buttercream and royal icing with paste food colourings
  • learn how to model figures from sugar modelling paste
  • learn how to make sugar flowers from sugar flower paste

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • a list of materials needed for the course will be given at the first session, some of these you will have at home and others will need to be bought / tutor will adivse where is best and cheapest to buy from.
