learners will learn how to use a variety of techniques to help decorate celebration cakes from colouring different icings, to makes fondant models and covering cakes with 3 different icings [ buttercream. marzipan and fondant icing]. cake that will be created this term will include a childrens halloween cake, and a festive cake. leaners will also be learning to make and use piping bags with piping nozzles filled with buttercream or royal icing for decoration on the celebration cakes.

Course aim

learns will gain knowledge and understanding of cake decorating through a variety of exercises, and using different skills to create celebration cakes

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for women only as it is held in a women's centre

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • learn how to mix colours correctly into buttercream, fondant icing, royal icing and marzipan
  • learn how to pipe using a piping bag and piping nozzles which are filled with either buttercream or royal icing to decorate a cake
  • learn how to make fondant models from fondant modelling paste
  • learn how to create a design for a cake by gathering different information from books. internet or instructions from friend, tutor or family member
  • learn how to create beautiful flowers from sugar florists paste

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • a full lit of equipment that is needed will be given t the first session and at the end of each session each week. tutor will give best places to get equipment from

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
