Novelty Cake Decorating

in this course learners will learn how to create children's novelty cakes using a variety of methods, from cutting and carving cakes into a required shape to covering them with buttercream and fondant icing. learners will also learn different modelling skills using fondant modelling paste and food colours.

Course aim

to give learners an exciting opportunity to learner how to create childerns novelty cakes , with a view to making them for family and friends and community

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for women only as it is held in a women's centre

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • learn how to cut and carve a cake into a given shape and design ready for decorating
  • learn how to use food paste colours correctly for mixing into different icing ready for use on the novelty cakes
  • learn how to model figure and shapes from modelling fondant icing
  • learn how to use picture to help create a design for a novelty cake
  • learn how to properly structure and support cake for novelty cakes

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • all materials and equipment will need to be brought to class each week with you, a full list will be povided at the beginning of the term and tutor will also remind each learners at the end of the lesson ready for the following week
