Gentle Exercise with Yoga

Physical activity and exercise are a recognised intervention in helping to increase balance, mobility, reaction times, muscle strength and general wellbeing. As a consequence of the above the risk of falling is greatly reduced. Chair based Yoga and exercise with the use of strengthening bands is a very safe, gentle and effective way to maintain and promote mobility and independence in older frailer people. Everyone can take part even those with very restricted mobility and memory problems.

Course aim

To provide a Chair Based exercise with Yoga programme for less active older people in order to maintain and / or promote balance, mobility, independence and hopefully decrease the risk of falling.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is run for residents and friends who live at Trevelyan Court Sheltered Housing Complex.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Explain or demonstrate one exercise to help flexibility in the fingers.. .
  • Explain or demonstrate one warm up posture / asana.
  • Explain one functional link to a strengthening posture / asana , e.g. help with balance, walking etc
  • Explain or demonstrate one breathing technique.
  • Aware of AgeUK Inspire and Include activities in Newcastle.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • We always discuss alternative moves, during the session to either make things easier or to extend to a different level.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • People need to dress in comfortable clothing.
