Essential Skills for Work

This course is designed to help students to communicate successfully. Integrated skills lessons are full of different types of activities (pair and group work activities, brainstorming, open discussions and others) to maximise your opportunities for practising the language in class and outside the class. The course covers the following topics: Get Started, Changes in the UK, How we spend our time, Children’s health, Male and female roles, The company 4 you, I like working outside, Dream commuters, Messages, What does your future hold?, Weird or wonderful? The course has a strong focus on developing your conversational skills, covering the areas of grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing and listening appropriate to the level and improving your job skills alongside.

Course aim

It is aimed at enhancing adult learners' employability skills.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe and compare
  • Present Information and ideas in a logical sequence
  • Express views and opinions
  • Extract relevant information from a narrative or explanation face-to-face or on the phone and respond
  • Develop employability skills

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

  • All materials will be provided

Enrolment Conditions

You can enrol online if you meet all of the following requirements:

  • are paying the standard fee or are on any of the qualifying benefits
  • are paying with a credit/debit card or are not paying a fee because of a qualifying benefit
  • have a valid email address
  • have been resident in the UK, EU or EEA for the last 3 years
  • are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2017
  • have read and accept the standard terms and conditions
