The Winter Garden

This course is for those wishing to learn how to prepare the garden for the change in season. We will begin with basic gardening skills, such as weeding,digging and potting. We will learn how to plan for future growing and learn about plants suitable for the autumn/winter season.

Course aim

To introduce students to the skills needed for autumn into winter gardening. Students will learn potting techniques and how to plan and grow plants for future use.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for women only as it is held in a women's centre

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Pot up winter flowering bulbs correctly
  • Identify at least three current plants in the garden which need to be pruned.
  • Demonstrate at least 2 digging processes e.g. hand digging, forking over
  • Produce and use a site plan to identify possible new plants for the season ahead
  • Review seed and plant catalogues for 2018 growing season

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • As we will be working in the garden, students should wear old clothes and suitable stout footwear. They could bring their own garden gloves, if they have them.
