An Introduction to Archaeology of the Silk Road

What exactly is the Silk Road... or should it be roads? This course will introduce the region and some of its key archaeological sites. It will investigate some of the cultural and technological developments linked to the Road and related commercial exchanges. We will also discuss archaeological techniques that have been used on some of the sites, making this course suitable for anybody who would like to have an introduction to world archaeology in general, or has some archaeological knowledge but not familiar with the area in question.   

Course aim

This course will provide an introduction (mainly from an archaeological perspective) to the commercial links and cultures along the Silk Roads.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Be able to identify three different reasons why people have studied the Silk Roads.
  • Identify three different reasons why people used these routes
  • Be able to discuss three pieces of evidence from different cultures, and the sites that they come from

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • You may find it useful to bring a pen and paper if you wish to jot anything down.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
