An introduction to Sign Communication and British Sign Language

During the course you will learn hints and tips for effective signing and symbol use. You will learn to sign a range of names and words used in everyday situations and how to use them at home and work.

Course aim

To gain new skills and confidence to support signed conversation with deaf people and those with speech difficulties, learning difficulties, autism and Down syndrome.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Sign the alphabet
  • Give information in sign about what family you have.
  • Sign what food and drink you like to eat.
  • Use numbers to sign time of day.
  • Describe your pets or family pets, their name, age, where you got them

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Signed books hand outs Signs on the Lap top You can look on web sites to practice out side of the class

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • Quiz sheets signed bingo sign snap cards Alphabet dominoes

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • Note pad and pen
