Sewing (Thursday)

This course is for all levels of experience, we will be doing weekly tasks that we will then incorporate into your own projects, you can make either garments for yourself or your family. Or if you prefer you can make soft furnishings for your home. I've been teaching this course now for 6 years now and we have lovely groups of students who support each other in their own learning journey, come and join us you will learn new skills and be able to refresh old skills

Course aim

The aims for this course are: To make garment of their choice also to build on existing skills if they may already have

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • How to maintain your sewing machine
  • Understanding the workings of the sewing machine
  • Using different attachments on your sewing machine
  • Understanding patterns
  • Sizing and measuring

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A basic sewing kit, scissors, pins, needles, tailors chalk, and a project of your choice

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
