This Course provides basic techniques & skills for beginners which will enable Students to play guitar to a basic level. Areas covered include:- Basic Anatomy - Providing Students with an understanding/function of various features of the guitar; Holding the instrument - Students are shown how to hold the instrument both for practical purposes & for comfort; Naming Strings - An introduction to the Fret board providing a starting point to understanding of notes, sounds & how to begin navigating the fret board; Right hand & Left hand techniques. An introduction to applied playing method; Playing a Scale - Applied playing & finger co-ordination method whilst building a harmonic Major Scale; Chord formation - An introduction to the first chords; Rhythm & Strumming technique - Harmonic accompaniment for the right hand; Chord Changing Techniques and Song Play - Students will learn to accompany some contemporary songs and practice the rhythmic techniques they have acquired.

Course aim

To provide students with fundamental techniques enabling them to play contemporary style acoustic guitar.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Play a Major Scale
  • Play up to three Major Chords
  • Strum Chords in a rhythmic (time) pattern
  • Change from one Chord to another whilst maintaining rhythmic co-ordination, timing and strum pattern.
  • Accompany a range of contemporary songs using the techniques acquired & developed.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • The main method of teaching will be by demonstration. Interaction with fellow students will be encouraged. Additional work will be to practice the session work to enable the Student to develop to the best of their ability.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • Students will receive feed-back & encouragement within sessions both directly from the Tutor & from other students. Formal feedback via the Individual Learning Plan.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • Students need to have access to an acoustic or an electro-acoustic Guitar.
