An Introduction to World Archaeology

In this course we will introduce some of the key methods and techniques used in archaeology. From our classroom we will explore a variety of archaeological sites and look at the research that has been carried out. Some sites may be familiar, some may be new to you!

Course aim

To provide an introductory overview to the subject of archaeology, and investigate a variety of archaeological sites from around the world.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • 1) Demonstrate an understanding of archaeology, the development of the subject and how it may fit in with other disciplines.
  • 2) Identify at least 2 methods used in archaeology and what situations they may be used in.
  • 3) Be able to discuss at least 3 archaeological sites around the globe.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Depending on availability we may include a local excursion.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • You may find it useful to bring something to write with and a notepad

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
