Beginners Spanish

Students will be following everyday basic Spanish in a friendly and welcoming environment. The topics for study will range from greetings, ordering food to more specific sentencing structure, many of which can be found in most beginners Spanish resources i.e. the BBC Espana Viva book and online resources. Learners will have handouts and worksheets to practice from.

Course aim

Students will have the opportunity to study and learn the basic Spanish language. The course includes: listening, speaking, reading, writing, basic vocabulary and phrases for every day use.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify 10 basic words in Spanish
  • Identify 10 basic phrases in Spanish
  • Speak 3 short phrases in Spanish. (Question and Answer)
  • Identify 3 basic dialogues in Spanish. e.g. ask for the name, ask for nationality./ order a drink and snack.
  • Identify a drink and a snack in Spanish

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time
  • WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • Informal feedback from Tutor. Worksheets, peer assessment and self evaluation. Formal feedback via WEA Individual Learning Record

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Spanish beginners students need a note book and a pen.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Tutor follows España Viva book. Some España Viva book are provided in class. Access to BBC España online resources is useful.
