Indian Cooking

This course will enable you to learn how to cook authentic Indian dishes. Fresh ingredients are carefully selected and dishes are prepared in a friendly environment, keeping in mind all the health and safety issues. Discussions are made throughout the sessions about how to introduce healthier options and learn about the health benefits of various Indian spices and ingredients. Students who have attended this course previously have discussed and shared how they feel healthier after introducing fresh food and various spices in their diet.

Course aim

Students will be able to learn about key Indian spices and their health benefits. Healthier options of preparing a dish will also be discussed. Popular Indian dishes are carefully selected.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • 1. Identify 5 spice powders used in Indian Cookery.
  • 2. Memorise the procedure of making Chicken Chaat.
  • 3. Produce at least three Indian dishes.
  • 4. Identify the health benefits of at least three ingredients used in Indian cookery.
  • 5. List the ingredients for Methi Aalu

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
