This course is suitable for absolute beginners to creative textiles and also students who would like to experiment with and investigate other textile processes. We shall explore creating functional work eg. bags, wallhangings and cushions, also consider embellishment of work to include the use of recycled materials and other cultural textile influences.

Course aim

To provide a practical introduction to patchwork and Applique techniques and investigate sewing machine skills. To create a group Women Weaving For a Better World piece of work.

Who is the course for?

- No skills or experience needed - This course is suitable for beginners and improvers - This course is for women only as it is held in a women's centre

What topics will this course cover

- The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning - You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning - Join in to create a group weaving piece of work.

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

How will I know I'm making progress?

- A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion - You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor - You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning - You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions - Production of a personal portfolio if appropriate.

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

- A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you - A sewing kit which includes needles, threads, scissors and tape measure.

Reading and information sources

- No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What could the course lead to?

- Progress to another WEA course - Progress to a course with another provider - Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member - You could progress to Higher Education courses.
