Painting outdoors is a different experience to an indoor workshop.With 1 to1 tuition from the tutor the students can build up their own version of the landscape that they see. Covering areas such as skies, trees, building, etc. With development of tone, form and colour mixing. The student will chose for themselves which aspect of the landscape they prefer to paint.

Course aim

To provide an introduction to landscape painting 'Plein Air'. To improve the students understanding, improving colour mixing and brush handling.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Produce a pencil/charcoal sketch
  • Create form - use of colour to create shape
  • Create depth - distance, middle, foreground
  • Identify and mix colour
  • Improve brush technique

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Your work will be informally assessed as the tutor visits each student on a one to one basis. Giving you feedback on your progress, giving suggestions and answering questions.

What else do I need to know?

  • Own materials and equiptment is expected although there will be a small amount of materials and equiptment available.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • There is no reading that is essentialbut but it will help to read other art books as it will further your ability.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
