Art & Architecture: Liverpool and Beyond

Ref: C2419803

Liverpool is one of Britain’s great cities. We will explore its artistic and architectural achievements. We consider its origins and some early buildings e.g. Speke Hall and discover how the city developed in the Georgian period by seeing some of its significant buildings. This theme is continued into the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. We will consider the revolutionary development of the docks and their related buildings. The city has some of the finest art collections in Britain. We will look at some highlights of the Walker, concentrating on painters with connections to Liverpool. Perhaps the most famous buildings are the two cathedrals. They form a fascinating study of two points in the architecture of the twentieth century. Port Sunlight represents a pioneering architectural and planning experiment. It also has a fine and varied art collection so we will look at the contents of the Lady Lever Gallery in the context of the town in which it stands.
