What are superfoods? The properties and therapeutic value of some green foods including Chlorella, Spirulina, seaweeds, sprouted seeds/pulses and brassicas. The composition and dietary features of seeds, nuts, soya, Brewers yeast and Manuka honey. The importance of pre and probiotics. The nature and value of mixtures of superfoods. How to maximise the quality of food.

Course aim

To develop knowledge and practical skills to strengthen health and wellbeing. To enable students to apply the knowledge and skills gained during the course. To develop an understanding of current controversies in health.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Outline the meaning of the term 'superfood'
  • Describe the properties and therapeutic value of green foods
  • Outline the composition and dietary features of seeds, nuts and soya
  • Describe the nature and dietary value of mixtures of superfoods
  • Explain how to maximise the quality of food

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • A handout will be provided that contains notes on all planned topics of the talk

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
