Garment making for beginners to intermediates

New learners will be introduced to the domestic sewing machine and will be shown how to use it safely and confidently, you will be taught a range of basic sewing skills and techniques, gain experience working with simple patterns and learn how to cut out fabric accurately, you will be set projects designed to help develop your skills and understanding of garment construction and in the process learn how to make simple garments for children. Experienced learners will be introduced to new skills and techniques that will help them make simple garments for themselves using stretch fabric, they will also learn how to use the Overlocker to carry out simple tasks, learn how to take accurate body measurements, gain experience working with commercial patterns and learn how to make simple adjustments to their patterns for a better fit.

Course aim

The aim of the course is to help beginners or experienced learners develop a range of sewing skills and techniques, and build upon their understanding of garment making.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for people with good level of spoken English

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Safely and confidently use the appropriate tools and a range of equipment to produce garments
  • Carry out a range of sewing skills and techniques involved with the construction of garments
  • Learn how to make simple garments using both stretch and non-stretch fabric
  • Gain experience working with commercial patterns

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • The workshops will allow you to develop your skills and complete activities at your own paste but there will be ongoing assessment and feedback on your progress throughout the course.

What else do I need to know?

  • You do not need to bring anything as all materials will be provided.
