Creative Writing and Poetry

Would you like to learn about understanding and writing poetry in English? You do not need previous experience of writing poetry. You will need some basic communication skills in English. You will learn how to ex0press your experiences, thoughts and feelings in English through poetry. We will study some poems in English and you will start to write some verse in English too. This will involve learning the grammar, vocabulary and verb tenses needed to understand the poetry of others and also to write your own. You will leaner about verse, rhyme, rhythm, simile, metaphor and voice. We will also study pronunciation: intonation, stress, contraction and linking.

Course aim

This course is aimed at second language speakers who would like to improve their appreciation of poetry.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Begin to read and understand what is being expressed in a poem in English.
  • Begin to be able to express your thoughts, experiences and feelings in a poem.
  • Acquire some of the grammar and vocablulary sutiable to writing peoms
  • Learn some of the basic skills/vocabulary of poetry: verse, thyme, simile, metaphor, voice.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • You need to bring a pen, paper and a dictionary
