Craft: Creative Sewing part 2

You will learn 2 new patchwork techniques that will be made up into blocks, that can be made into two cushions that will be backed, piped and zips will be inserted to give a professional finish.

Course aim

This course is mainly to complete a quilt that has already been started in the part 1 but if you are coming to the course for the first time you will be able to complete 2 blocks of a new patchwork technique that can be made into cushions.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for people with little spoken English
  • This course is held in a school so you will have to sign in at each session.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Measure the fabric accurately
  • Learn how to rotary cut fabric
  • Use a sewing machine to stitch a 1/4 inch seam allowance
  • Choose colours for your blocks
  • Complete a block

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You can work at home to finish blocks.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Please bring in an A4 file to keep your hand-outs in, patterns and block information

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • You be expected to provided your own 100% cotton fabric or the tutor can sometimes purchase fabric for you if you want to work in particular colours.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • to look for patchwork and craft magazines is always useful to get an idea of what you like
