Tai Chi

This is an introductory course for people interested in finding out what Tai Chi and Qi Gong are, as well as for those wishing to learn and practice Tai Chi in a group setting. Classes will include low impact stretching exercises to improve muscle strength and flexibility in the joints, basic foundation Tai Chi walking and balancing exercises, and postures and movements of the Tai Chi 24 Form in Yang style.

Course aim

To introduce the principles and practice of Tai Chi and Qi Gong to beginners, incorporating foundation exercises, postures and movement.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand the history, philosophy, and principles of tai chi chuan
  • Understand how tai chi practice promotes and improves health
  • Perform suitable warm up and cool down safely.
  • Perform ten basic Yang Style Tai Chi forms
  • Improve breathing techniques, posture and mental focus through Qi Gong practice

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
