This course provides a good grounding in the everyday uses of computers and the internet in a relaxed and friendly environment. The course will cover creating a CV and covering letter, uploading CV's to jobsite using the Internet, become familiar with using programs within Microsoft Office via Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint to create documents, edit, format manage files and folders, perform calculations, prepare slides for presentation The students will gain the knowledge and confidence to perform everyday tasks independently. Every student is catered for individually and equipment and materials are provided.

The Computer Skills for Work course is aimed at students of mixed ability.

Course aim

Get to grips with computer skills to help you into work, learn how to save, file and attach documents onto job sites and feel confident using a computer

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Create CV and covering letter in Word to upload onto job websites
  • Become familiar with using Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Create, edit and format documents using Word
  • Perform calculations using Excel
  • Prepare slides for presentation using PowerPoint

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
