Exercise and Dance

A friendly, relaxed and fun low intensity exercise to music class for adults with learning disabilities. It is suitable for both beginners and those wanting to increase their fitness and activity levels. Activities will include floor exercises; working individualy with partners and in groups; and the use of small hand weights and resistance equipment.

Course aim

To increase fitness and activity levels through exercise, dance and sports games.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is open to adults with learning disabilities.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Perform a short aerobic dance sequence.
  • Perform a group country dance.
  • Show a standing and /or lying hamstring stretch position.
  • complete a set of 8/12/16 press ups in the full/ modified position.
  • Hold and swing the kettlebell correctly.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • Photographs and videos taken of exercises and routines performed

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • wear loose comfortable clothing for exercise - trousers, leggings or shorts, T-shirt and training shoes. You will be performing some floor exercises that may require lying on the floor.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • Practise at home of exercises learnt in class would help increase fitness levels at a quicker pace.
