Architecture Appreciation

This course will explore the rich stylistic evolution of architecture in France from the middle ages to the present day. Topics will range from the initial appearance of the Gothic style in the early 1100s; through the advent of the neo-classicism of the Renaissance, and the glories of the high Baroque of Versailles and the delicacies of the Rococo era; culminating with Haussmann’s redevelopment of Paris, the 19th and 20th century innovations of the industrial architecture of Eiffel, and the Modernism of Le Corbusier.

Course aim

To introduce students to the general evolution of architecture and interior décor and design in France from the middle ages to the present day

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise the principal stylistic characteristics of post-Renaissance architecture in France
  • Recognise the most significant aspects of French interior décor and design during the period concerned
  • Describe the stylistic parameters of Gothic, Baroque, neo-Classical, and Modernist architecture in general terms

How will I be taught?

  • Illustrated classroom talks, supplemented by class discussions

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
