Kurdish Language and Culture - Part 1

Kurdish (Kurmanji) language course. You will acquire a grammatical grounding in Kurdish which will provide the foundation for more in-depth study later on. This course focuses on general structures and functions and includes practice in the four skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing).

Course aim

To equip you with the key language skills to enable you to communicate in Kurdish at a basic level, or to facilitate a trip to the countries where the target language is spoken.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • The course is ideal for those with no previous knowledge of the language, but who wish to acquire basic skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing in Kurdish

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Communicate simply but effectively in Kurdish at an elementary level
  • Understand basic cultural and social aspects of the language
  • Talk about yourself and understand when others tell you about themselves and their circumstances, including jobs
  • Have a knowledge of basic grammatical structures.
  • Understand basic written instructions, signs and short communications

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time
  • A communicative approach will be used throughout the course, with an emphasis on real-life situations. Grammar will be taught in context and general terms.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • You can always find some learning materials online and you can get Kurdish books online to help you with your practice.
