Revolution and Counter Revolution in Germany 1918-1934

The course will examine German society leading up to the First World War. It will introduce the growth of the Social Democrats and the differing views of its members towards the war. It will look at the establishment of the Weimar Republic and its instability, the events of 1923, the effects of the Great Depression and the Nazi Party's rise to power and how it consolidated its power.

Course aim

This course will look at the German revolution and the defeat of Germany in World War I, the Weimar Republic and the rise to power of Hitler

What topics will this course cover

- The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning - You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

How will I know I'm making progress?

- A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion - WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment.

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

- Students only need to bring pens and paper for making notes.

Reading and information sources

- No pre reading or pre course work is required - Throughout the course the tutor will recommend relevant books and websites.

What could the course lead to?

- Progress to another WEA course - Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
