The Labour Party - From Formation to the Attlee Government

The course will study the background to the formation of the Labour Party including early socialist ideas and the rise of the trade unions. It will look at the relationship between the organised working class and the Liberal Party. It will examine the different component parts that helped form the Labour Representation Committee such as the Independent Labour Party, the Social Democratic Federation, the Fabian Society and the trade unions. It will also look at the early growth of the Labour Party and the first Labour governments. Finally we will study the post-war government of Attlee.

Course aim

The course will introduce the events that led up to the formation of the Labour Party, its growth as a party, the first Labour governments and the post-war Attlee government.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • 1. Have a basic knowledge of socialist ideas in Victorian Britain
  • 2. Know about the trade union movement in the 19th century and its politics
  • 3. Have some understanding of why the Labour Party was formed by its constituents
  • 4. Recognise the key events of the first Labour governments and the Attlee government
  • 5. Be able to actively participate in the class and be involved in class discussions

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment.

What else do I need to know?

  • Students only need to bring pens and paper for making notes.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • Throughout the course the tutor will recommend relevant books and websites.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
