Six morning walks which will uncover some of London’s lesser-known areas and will tell part of the story historically, socially and culturally of the most diverse city in the world. Please note: Occasionally a walk may involve a venue which charges an entrance fee. Total fees will never exceed £20 in any term. 11/04 Pimlico (Start Methodist Central Hall; Finish Tate Gallery). 18/04 Bayswater (Start Lancaster Gate Tube; Finish Queensway Tube). 25/04 Chelsea (Start Cremorne Gardens: Imperial Wharf Station from Clapham Junction Finish Sloane Square). 02/05 Dickens South London (Start Borough tube station; Finish London Bridge). 09/05 Mayfair (Start Green Park tube; Finish Bond Street tube). 16/05 Strand (Start Temple Tube; finish Charing Cross). Student notes and maps are distributed weekly.

Course aim

To learn about various aspects of London's, social, historical and cultural development from a series of walks in various parts of the capital

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • Ability to walk at a moderate pace for up to two hours.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Have a wider appreciation of certain areas of London and London life.
  • Have acquired fresh knowledge on different aspects of London.
  • Have benefited in terms of healt
  • Feel a part of a group and have made friend

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • The class will be encouraged to express their opinions and make contributions throughout the course and to shape its content.

What else do I need to know?

  • Appropriate shoes and clothing for walking during winter and spring. Students may wish to make notes so writing/materials could be brought along

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No preparation is required. Student notes on each walk will be provided and will include suggestions for further reading/activity.
