This course will give you an opportunity to consolidate and improve your speaking and listening skills with activities based on authentic materials and everyday interactions. You are encouraged to actively participate in class. You will also gain an insight into Italian culture and society. The tutor is a native Italian speaker.

Course aim

You will consolidate and improve your Italian language skills for everyday situations while discovering more about Italian culture.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • A basic knowledge of Italian is required

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Interact in a bar/restaurant
  • Give more information about yourself and your family/friends
  • Talk about past events/situations
  • Go shopping for clothes
  • Make/accept/refuse an invitation

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • A communicative approach will be used with an emphasis on pair and group interaction.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be asked to do a short written task at home. Listening tests will be provided to check your understanding of the spoken language as well as exercises, to check your knowledge of grammar and vocabulary.

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • An exercise book Small English Italian dictionary is recommended

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • It would be helpful to review how to exchange basic personal information in Italian and manage very simple conversations on everyday topics.

  • This course will provide authentic access to the Italian language and culture, and it will help those who want to continue learning Italian or to refresh their knowledge about the language.
