We will learn about the development of Cubism and Collage & Surrealism: Colleagues and Influences. In depth exploration of Demoiselles d'Avignon, Guernica. Colleagues and Collaborations: Braque, Matisse, Max Ernst.

Course aim

Picasso and the Emergence of Modernism. We look at Significant Works by Picasso (and his contemporaries) with the aim of learning to identify ground-breaking Works in the Field of Modernism

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify the key influences of Cubism,
  • to recognise Cubist Art works and their significance to the Modernism Movement
  • contextualise Significant works by Picasso ie. Demoiselles d'Avignon and Guernica within their Social and Political Backgrounds
  • to identify and compare Picasso's influence on other artists such as Henry Moore
  • identify Modernist Art Works and contextualise them within the movement we now call Modernism

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Students who are willing to undertake some personal research (reading more about the topic, especially copy given to them by the Tutor) will engage more confidently with course materials.

What else do I need to know?

  • A small folder to keep Lesson Plans and Photocopies of Information on the Topic provided by the Tutor. A notebook to keep notes and record personal responses to the course materials and perhaps helpful for Personal Research

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
