The first term will look at the’ Road to War’ looking at the underlying causes of the war in Britain and some of the key events with sessions on: • The Royal family and the constitutional crisis of 1936 • Oswald Mosley & the rise of fascism • The Mitford sisters and pro-Nazi sentiment • Neville Chamberlain, and Appeasement • Clement Atlee & Winston Churchill • War-time Sweethearts – Gracie Fields & Vera Lynn • General Montgomery & El Alamein • Monty & D-Day

Course aim

To provide an overview to the main causes of the Second World War and an exploration of political and social themes in England in the 1930s

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand the main causes of the build up to the Second World War
  • Understand the policy of Appeasement in Britain and why Mosley and Fascism gained popularity in the 1930s
  • Understand how the political support in the country shifted from Neville Chamberlain to Winston Churchill
  • Understand how Oswald Mosley gained support in England and why his popularity fell
  • Understand the leadership qualities of Winston Churchill

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

  • All materials will be provided
